Position Title: Chemical & Biological Engineering Department Head
Job Description: The Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering at Colorado School of Mines seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic leader to head the department. Responsibilities:

Department Heads at Mines are expected to work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment both within the department and across the campus to:  

  • Support and further enhance the education and research missions of the department and accelerate progress to  higher distinction through a solid vision and strategy.
  • Provide leadership in the management of the department, with budgetary responsibilities for strategic, academic and operational development, and teaching activities and innovation.
  • Administer, promote, and lead multidisciplinary chemical and biological engineering research and fund-raising for research activities.
  • Represent the department to the university administration, other university units, and to public and private agencies at local, regional, national, and international levels; including interactions with these entities and department alumni. and
  • Oversee recruitment, professional development, and retention of faculty, staff, and students.

Department Heads at Mines are also expected to teach courses, advise graduate students, and maintain a leading international research program.

Minimum Qualifications: The Department Head will be appointed as academic faculty at the full professor level in the department. Therefore, a doctorate in chemical engineering, or a closely-related field with a distinguished record of accomplishment in scholarship, teaching and service, as well as national and international recognition, is required. Strong leadership qualities, including effective interpersonal communication and organizational skills, are a must. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the department transparently and collegially. The successful candidate should be responsive to the needs of the students, staff, and faculty within the department and have a strong commitment to diversity.
Preferred Qualifications: Administrative experience and/or evidence of successful personnel and financial management are desired.
Department Description:

Colorado School of Mines, one of the nation's top-30 public universities, is Colorado's oldest, most selective and most highly-ranked public university. Located in Golden, Colorado, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Mines is minutes from Denver and Boulder. The Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering, recently ranked the second best chemical engineering program by College Factual, includes 15 tenure/tenure track faculty and 8 teaching faculty, as well as research faculty and support staff, 820 undergraduate and 35 graduate students, making it one of the largest chemical engineering programs in the country. The department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The Head will work in close collaboration with the Heads of Physics, Chemistry, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and the Dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Engineering to create a supportive, diverse, and outstanding education and research environment.
