Position Title: Chemical Safety Officer
Job Description: The Chemical Safety Officer is an entry to mid-level professional position that provides support, guidance and education to faculty, staff, researchers and students on the implementation of chemical safety programs in order to further the campus safety culture.  The position reports to the Associate EHS Director/Environmental Manager.
Responsibilities:
  • Consult with researchers and staff on the safe use of chemicals and safe chemical handling work practices.  Evaluate and assist in development of safe work procedures and disseminate chemical safety information.
  • Actively manage the campus wide chemical inventory system. Implement and manage a campus-wide chemical inventory system and use the system to generate regulatory reports such as the EPCRA and RCRA reports.
  • Administer, maintain and implement campus-wide chemical and bio-safety programs including written guidance and policy documents.
  • Administer campus medical monitoring program and record keeping.
  • Develop and deliver chemical safety-related training to campus personnel.
  • Coordinate chemical spill response team.
  • Package hazardous materials for transportation.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in chemistry or chemical engineering OR a bachelor's degree in environmental science, or biological science with a minor in chemistry, AND demonstrated experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the principles of chemistry and practices related to the recognition, control and elimination of chemical-related physical and health hazards.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying, communicating and controlling chemical reactions, compatibility and handling issues, and chemical packaging and shipping regulations.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft software products such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint
  • Strong project/time management skills with the ability to develop and deliver on multiple/concurrent projects.

This position requires the ability to perform site work that can involve extreme weather conditions, moderate physical exertion, climbing ladders and crawling in cramped spaces; the ability to walk one mile continuously; the ability to stand continuously for two hours; the ability and willingness to wear respiratory protection, including a full-face respirator without accommodation and the ability and willingness to use self-contained breathing apparatus. Employment in this position is subject to successful completion of a post-offer pre-employment physical examination which will determine ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 40-hour HazWoper Certification
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist
  • Certified Safety professional
  • International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) training to prepare and ship hazardous materials/dangerous goods for transportation via air or road.
  • Experience serving as a Chemical Hygiene Officer, Bio-Safety Officer or Radiation Safety Officer
Department Description: The Environmental Health and  Safety (EHS) Department provides consultation, information, education, and tools to the campus to provide a safe place to learn and work.

Compensation: Starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
