Position Title: Online Program Manager
Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Online Program Manager to inform, organize and coordinate the creation of Mines’ Fully Online Programs. This position will provide operational and logistical guidance to campus by working closely with the Trefny Center Director and various committees/key stakeholders focused on different aspects of the project. The ideal candidate will be an excellent collaborator and will have experience in managing projects, preferably related to online programs in higher education.

The Online Program Manager will perform a wide range of functions associated with the program including identifying policy and practices gaps to meet the needs of the new online programs, monitoring program operation and administration, reporting on program operations including student retention and success rates, supporting and guiding marketing activities including maintaining the program Website, as well as other initiatives required for a successful program. Initially this position will focus on ramping up our fully-online programs. As the program structures are developed, this position will transition to focus more on the overall success, reporting, and growth of the programs. 

The successful candidate will have the demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships and effectively address complex and sensitive administrative issues in a fast-paced work environment. This is a full-time, on-campus appointment.


Pursuant to the university on-line strategy, engages with relevant cross-campus teams while supporting and managing the development of Mines’ online programs by reviewing current policies and practices and making educated recommendations to develop world-class online learning programs. This includes ensuring that all relevant State and Federal requirements and guidelines are met. 

Coordinates the project plan, serving as a project manager to ensure appropriate involvement and feedback from all key stakeholders. This includes leading the development of an Online Program action plan in collaboration with key stakeholders by formulating objectives; planning project life-cycle deliverables and resource availability and application; preparing technical guideline specifications; managing the exploration, evaluation, and design of technical solutions. Accomplishes work requirements by following production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; identifying work process improvements. 

Informs the Online project scope by studying strategic drivers; discovering and validating operational and technical requirements and parameters; obtaining input from subject-matter experts; examining and recommending changes to current policies and practices; developing and writing reports. Advances job knowledge by tracking technology and project management advances; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations. 

Supports and guides the implementation of the Online Programs as they are developed. This includes guiding and monitoring the entire process from recruitment and registration through retention and completion.

Monitors project progress through analysis of data; tracking action items; conducting design and implementation reviews; examining, researching, and resolving issues; elevating issues to appropriate authority; responding to team members' concerns; coordinating requirements with interested departments.

Assures the quality of our Online Program by developing and completing test plans; maintaining project and technical documentation and analyzes data to assess distance learning program status or to inform decisions for distance learning programs.

Guides the development of web-resources to promote (market) and support the online program. 

Other duties as assigned that contribute to the overall success of the Center and Institution. These will be determined based on the needs of the Center and strengths of the successful candidate.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a leadership or coordination capacity with online learning and programs 
  • Proven experience as a Program Manager or other project management position with a thorough understanding of project/program management techniques and methods
  • Understanding of State and Federal guidelines and requirements related to online courses, such as ADA, FERPA, accreditation, state-to-state agreements for offering online degrees, and so forth
  • The candidate must have demonstrated in his/her professional experience excellent interpersonal, professional, verbal, and exceptional written communication skills. Must have demonstrated the ability to relate not just with faculty, staff and students, but also with external audiences (e.g., media, vendors, guests, Alumni). This includes experience and expertise in using varying communication platforms (e.g., verbal, print media, email, web, social media) to engage stakeholders
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • Master’s degree required in a related field. Additional qualifying experience and/or certifications may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with online programs in Higher Education is preferred.
