Position Title:  Dual Appointment - Tenure Track Assistant/Associate Professor and NREL Researcher
Job Description:

This dual appointment is for an NREL Researcher and a tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) at Colorado School of Mines (Mines) at either the assistant or associate professor level. The selected individual will be expected to work closely with faculty and students from Mines as well as their team members at NREL. Ideally, this could be accomplished with a 0.25 - 0.40 FTE appointment at Mines and a 0.60 - 0.75 FTE appointment at NREL, i.e., where the primary commitment is at NREL.

The position will work both at the Mines campus and at the NREL National Wind Technology Center. 


The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialty and to mentor graduate students as they develop and sustain a strong, externally funded research program. We are especially interested in candidates whose approach is interdisciplinary and will work broadly and collaboratively, both within their home Department and across the Mines campus. While applicants of all ranks and research areas will be considered, we have particular interest in Assistant Professor applicants with expertise in the area of structural composites.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must possess a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Science, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, and demonstrated potential for successful teaching, scholarship and service. The successful candidate must also have strong interpersonal and communications skills.

From its inception in 1952, the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department has focused on education and basic and applied research that addresses problems of national interest. We maintain a high-quality, well-funded research program (~$7 million in annual research awards) with strong participation from students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Approximately 80 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars study within a broad research portfolio, including major programs in gas hydrates, energy, soft materials, biomedical research, electronic materials, simulation and modeling, and pedagogy. Many faculty benefit from close collaborations with local partners such as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC). The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an energy future that is both environmentally and economically sustainable. NREL’s National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) conducts world-class research in the areas of wind energy, water power, and grid integration. As part of NREL’s missions in wind energy and water power, NREL is seeking a materials scientist or manufacturing scientist with a focus in composite materials appropriate for renewable energy applications. As part of this research position, the successful candidate will lead the scientific direction and publishing output for an established manufacturing research group at the NWTC. This position requires initiative, creativity, and strong communication skills to propose new research to the U.S. Department of Energy as well as industrial partners. The successful candidate must have strong proposal writing skills and understand how to leverage research into technology transfer to industry.
