Position Title: Research Faculty/Technician for TOF-SIMS
Job Description:

The Renewable Energy Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (REMRSEC) is seeking a well-qualified technician to operate, perform tests, train researchers, and develop and maintain procedures for the ION-TOF.SIMS 5.

Equipment details: The instrument is an incredibly well-equipped TOF-SIMS: ION-TOF TOF.SIMS 5-100 basic unit with the addition of a transfer vessel, in-situ FIB, extended dynamic range analyzer (EDR), and gas cluster source. The system was funded by an NSF Major Research Instrumentation grant.

The instrument will be delivered in July of 2018 and will be located in the Multiscale Materials Characterization Facility (4200 ft2 ) in the CoorsTek Center for Applied Science and Engineering on the campus of the Colorado School of Mines. Other instruments in the facility include an Atom Probe Tomography system; an (S)TEM; an XRay Diffractometer with micro-diffraction, SAXS/WAXS, and temperature stage; an Environmental-XPS; a scanning acoustic microscope; an X-ray tomography system; a confocal Raman/AFM; 2 SPM systems equipped with tapping mode AFM, MFM, NSOM, and STM; as well as sample preparation tools including a dual-column Focused Ion Beam/FESEM with EDS, EBSD, and in-situ manipulation; and a cross-section ion polisher.


  • Operate the ION-TOF TOF.SIMS 5 and all its components, performing high quality, cutting edge data acquisition and interpretation to support research programs in all material classes. 
  • Perform TOF-SIMS on a wide variety of materials, optimize parameters and sample preparation for targeted data collection. 
  • Train researchers (including students) to use the system independently and to interpret data. 
  • Develop and maintain a user training procedure and safety procedures. 
  • Oversee scheduling and billing for equipment use through the FOM system. 
  • Build a user base composed of internal, external, and industrial contacts by actively seeking new users, advertising capabilities, and providing application support. 
  • Work with manager to ensure adequate ‘uptime’ and billed equipment use hours to financially support the operation and maintenance of the equipment (~$200K/year). 
  • Perform basic maintenance of the equipment, including pump maintenance, gas and cryogen replacement, and oversee all repairs made by the manufacturer. 
  • Work collaboratively with other staff and faculty affiliated with the Multiscale Materials Characterization Facility, including analytical facility staff at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Relevant MS or PhD degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • 5 years of related technical experience 
  • 2 years of experience in maintaining technical scientific equipment 
  • Ability to participate in delivery and installation of instrument during July of 2018
