Position Title: System Administration Manager
Job Description:

This position manages the System Administration team within Infrastructure Solutions in the division of Computing, Communications and Information Technologies (CCIT). CCIT provides support for enterprise, departmental and research servers as well as the institution’s Research Computing (HPC) systems.

The System Administration Team is responsible for physical, virtual, cloud and hybrid computation and storage. It also serves as a Tier II support organization.

  • Develop and implement the institution’s long-term strategy regarding computing systems; create and implement multi-year plans to ensure the ongoing needs of the institution are met
  • Set priorities for the team and team members to ensure that the needs of the institution are met in a timely and secure fashion
  • Supervise team members including performing required employee performance reviews and tracking and documenting sick and vacation leave. Address personnel needs by means such as hiring, external professional services, or other
  • Plan, design, document, and implement guidelines, rules, operational procedures, and standards to be used by all CCIT system administrators in the performance of their duties. Determine and assure adequate procedures are applied consistently across all systems in order to accomplish CCIT service goals. Assure existing vendor-based standards are followed and replicate these as much as possible across all systems
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry standards and future trends by reviewing industry and trade publications, maintaining appropriate membership in professional societies and attending regular training and professional meetings
  • Recommend and implement hardware and software upgrades, additions, and/or replacements to support the needs of the departments and users of the system. Coordinate and work with other campus staff and vendors to accomplish above tasks
  • Ensure the thorough documentation of  design, implementation, modifications, and ongoing maintenance of the systems

This position is expected to work 40-hour weeks, with additional off-hour and weekend work as needed by usual IT demands of uptime and change management. The position is part of the Mines after hour notification system and after hour emergency contact list and is expected to help lead the resolution of after-hours issues and emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Significant experience performing system administration in complex enterprise environments
  • While not required, a bachelor’s degree and experience working in higher education are preferred

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with tools such as Docker, Git, Jenkins, Puppet, or similar
  • Experience with Confluence and similar collaboration tools
  • Experience with cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, RackSpace, and/or others
  • Experience transitioning traditional environments to DevOps/Cloud
Department Description: Computing, Communications, and Information Technologies (CCIT) provides information technology services and support to meet the instructional, administrative, and research needs of the Colorado School of Mines. CCIT manages and operates central academic and administrative technology infrastructure and systems including learning technologies, enterprise systems, business and administrative systems, as well as servers, storage and the voice/data networking infrastructure. CCIT also provides research support services including three High Performance Computing platforms. In addition to providing key infrastructure and technology platforms, services provided to the campus community include e-mail, wired and wireless network operation and support, phone services, server and network security, volume and site licensing of software, videoconferencing, online student services, and support for Mines learning management system (Canvas). CCIT's Client Services and Support Team, which includes the Technology Support Center, provides customer-focused technical assistance and support through a centralized Help Desk.
