SQL Server DBA

Job Description:

This position creates, maintains and documents SQL Server databases for development, test, and production environments.  Ensures backups, data recovery, data integrity, and space requirements for databases are met through monitoring of procedures and standards relating to database management. 

This position also supports application servers and load balancers along with the applications hosted on these servers including, but not limited to, lock system, badging, Recreation Center, and Student Housing.  This position works closely with functional teams as they implement new applications in addition to coordinating and installing upgrades and patches in development, test, and production for existing applications.   The SQL Server DBA will develop and meet client production schedules as determined by the governing structure and work in a fast paced environment.

Responsibilities:

Support SQL Server databases which includes:

  • Performing capacity planning and management of database environments and recommends expansion/replacement of existing hardware and software components
  • Installation, upgrades, patches, maintenance, monitoring and tuning of all databases using database management/monitoring tools
  • Designing and implementing database backup and recovery and daily operational procedures in support of hosted database systems
  • Troubleshooting and resolving technical problems and providing on-call support
  • Functioning as technical resource and mentor on SQL Server and Windows for other staff members

Support and maintain current applications which includes:

  • Installing, upgrading, configuring, managing and maintaining applications
  • Working with vendor technical support to resolve test and production application issues
  • Assisting in definition of, and analyzing the impact of defects in the production environment, suggesting possible remedies to supervisors, peers, and user community
  • Configuring users and groups following Mines standards

This position is expected to help ensure the 24x7 operation of the institution’s database systems.  This includes minimizing the impact of downtime required for maintenance by scheduling patches and upgrades for off-hours or weekends as well as responding to after-hours outages.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in computer science or a field closely related to computer science.  Individuals without a degree may be considered if they demonstrate possession of substantially the same knowledge level as found in a degree, but have attained the advanced knowledge through a combination of work experience and intellectual instruction.
  • Current professional SQL Server DBA experience which included acting as a lead DBA on large application projects
  • Experience must include MS SQL Server 2014; ANSI SQL; database object development such as tables, views, indexes, triggers and stored procedures; and Windows Server 2008R2 and 2012R2
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose/resolve technical problems independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with technical staff as well as non-technical users both verbally and in writing
  • Clearly demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment and to work cooperatively with others
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and complete tasks on schedule
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in Higher Education
  • Experience with modern web frameworks such as XML, Javascript, and CSS
  • Experience with source code control and versioning application GIT
  • Experience with Linux OS platforms
  • Experience with Oracle 11g/12c
  • Experience with Ellucian products, especially Banner and ODS/EDW
  • Experience with F5 load balancer, WebLogic, and Apache Tomcat
Department Description: Computing, Communications, and Information Technologies (CCIT) provides information technology services and support to meet the instructional, administrative, and research needs of the Colorado School of Mines. CCIT manages and operates central academic and administrative technology infrastructure and systems including learning technologies, enterprise systems, business and administrative systems, as well as servers, storage and the voice/data networking infrastructure. CCIT also provides research support services including three High Performance Computing platforms. In addition to providing key infrastructure and technology platforms, services provided to the campus community include e-mail, wired and wireless network operation and support, phone services, server and network security, volume and site licensing of software, videoconferencing, online student services, and support for Mines learning management system (Canvas). CCIT's Client Services and Support Team, which includes the Technology Support Center, provides customer-focused technical assistance and support through a centralized Help Desk.
