Job Description:

The George S. Ansell Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for experienced candidates for a tenured or tenure-track position at the associate or full professor level. Exceptional candidates will be considered for the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Endowed Chair in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related field. We seek candidates in the area of welding and joining, with welding chemistry, physical metallurgy and/or corrosion expertise. Successful candidates will support the Center for Welding, Joining, and Coatings Research (CWJCR) and the Manufacturing & Materials Joining Innovation Center (Ma2JIC), a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center that is joint with partners from other universities. Understanding the shipbuilding and related marine industries is highly preferred for successful ABS Endowed Chair candidates.

About Mines, the Department, and Golden, CO:

Colorado School of Mines is located in picturesque Golden, in the foothills of the Rockies, 15 miles west of Denver and 20 miles south of Boulder. The George S. Ansell Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering has focused on education and basic and applied research that addresses problems of national interest, including the fundamental knowledge-base associated with materials processing, their properties, and their selection and application. It is also home to centers of excellence in the areas of physical metallurgy and advanced ceramics, such as the Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center (ASPPRC), the Center for Advanced Non-Ferrous Structural Alloys (CANFSA), the CWJCR and Ma2JIC, and the Colorado Center for Advanced Ceramics (CCAC). Our undergraduate enrollment is 188, with 32.4% women and 10.6% underrepresented students (for more information on diversity & inclusion in the department visit our website We maintain a high-quality, well-funded research program ($10+ million in annual research awards) with strong participation from students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Approximately 135 graduate students and 13 postdoctoral scholars (29.7% women, 5.4% underrepresented) study within a broad research portfolio. The Department offers a BS degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; program options for graduate students include MS and PhD degrees in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering or Materials Science.
