Position Title: Temporary International Student Advisor
Job Description:

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services, and in close contact with Assistant Provost for International Affairs, the Temporary International Student Advisor will be responsible for a range of student services including immigration advising for F and J visas, student orientation sessions, workshops, and other activities in support of international student success.

Responsibilities: This position reviews and determines eligibility of prospective students and grants documents necessary to apply for and maintain F1 and J1 status. Oversees 1-20 and DS2019 issuance and the SEVIS database. Develops and leads programs and services provided to the international student population including orientations cultural programming, tax/employment workshops, etc. Oversees international student sponsors in collaboration with Assistant Director and monitors academic and graduation progress of international students. Serves as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J visa program and serves as a campus Designated School Official (DSO) for the F visa program (respectively) certified by the US Department of State and Homeland Security to meet federal requirements with SEVIS.  Develops instructions/handbook for students to apply for federal benefits, change of status, reinstatements, CPT, OPT etc. Strategically plans/assesses international student experience to inform/improve services and programming offered.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and some work experience related to F and/or J Visa advising, regulations and processing at an institution of higher education
  • Strong intercultural communication skills and customer service with an international audience
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations and language proficiency levels; ability to work with diverse population at all levels of organization including faculty, staff, senior management, students, and representatives from external organizations; and demonstrated interest and skills to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to analyze situations, identify existing or potential problems, recommend solutions, and determine and implement procedures to accomplish effective resolution and evaluation of results/progress
  • Excellent organizational skills to develop, manage, and implement programs and activities, ability to complete assignments independently and meet changing deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Banner and Terra Dotta (or similar) and knowledge of international student and immigration regulations and SEVIS
  • Knowledge and experience providing reports and advice to the supervisor on issues with existing policies and making recommendations for improvements
Department Description: The International Student & Scholar Services Office (ISSS) serves approximately 750 international students from 77 countries who attend Mines. The International Student & Scholar Services Office is dedicated to facilitating international education and cross-cultural exchanges at Colorado School of Mines. It is our mission to assist and inform international students and scholars of the privileges and stipulations mandated by federal regulations in a timely and practical manner to ensure they successfully maintain their status and have a positive experience at Mines.
