Position Title: Research Associate 
Job Description:

This Research Associate position will run a LA-ICP-MS lab in the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering. 

The duration of the position is three years, with potential to extend.  

Responsibilities:
  • Routine running and maintenance of a LA-ICP-MS lab (e.g., daily operation and monthly cleaning). The laser system is an ASI RESOlution-SE instrument. The main ICP-MS to be looked after is an Agilent 8900 QQQ (ms/ms). The lab also has a Perkin Elmer NexION 300Q ICP-MS and a Perkin Elmer Optima 8300 Concentric ICP-OES that may need attention from time to time.
  • Set up and tune the instruments to get them ready for users to perform measurements (e.g., mineral trace element analysis and U-Pb dating).
  • Train and supervise users to prepare samples, perform measurements, and carry out data reduction
  • Sample preparation, measurement, and data reduction of external samples. 
  • Other duties as assigned.  
Minimum Qualifications:
  • MSc or higher degree in geology or analytical chemistry
  • Experience running LA-ICP-MS instruments and peripheral devices (not just performing measurements), and conducting maintenance.

NOTE:  The hiring department is unable to sponsor a work visa  (e.g., J-1, H-1B, etc.) for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in analyzing mineral trace elements and LA-ICP-MS elemental mapping, and data reduction.
  • Experience in LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of zircon and other minerals (e.g., titanite, apatite)
  • Programming or advanced Excel experience

Total Rewards: Starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
