Position Title: Assistant Director of Graduate Studies
Job Description:

The Assistant Director of the Office of Graduate Studies provides front-line support and leadership in delivering innovative and impactful programs led by the Dean, office staff, or other faculty as directed by the Dean of Graduate Studies. This position will handle complex student issues with faculty advisors, collaborate with the Dean of Graduate Studies on dealing with students on probation, and overall serves in as second in command to the Dean.

Responsibilities:

Academic and Administrative Policy Leadership and Management

  • Serve as the liaison to departments and other offices that serve graduate students on matters of graduate policies and procedures
  • Confirm Graduate Catalog modifications are consistent with new policies/practices and approved degree programs
  • Manage communications with the Registrar, students, and faculty to support the Dean as she/he reviews student progress to degree indicators and suspension/dismissal notifications
  • Provide oversight of Graduate Program Managers, Department Managers, and Graduate Studies Administrator as appropriate to ensure timely completion of Office of Graduate Studies degree completion processes 
  • Ensure final thesis format review and approval
  • Handles delicate and complex graduate student advisor issues

Collaborate with Dean and Academic Departments on new curriculum, programs, and programmatic initiatives

  • Lead efforts to develop international dual-degree programs; provide oversight with the International Office
  • Work with departments to develop new curricula/programs. Work with faculty to address issues as they arise
  • Provide institution-wide advising services including oversight and coordination of staffing to support interdisciplinary programs
  • Support the Graduate Dean’s initiatives on stimulating program growth, program review, program outreach, etc

Administrative Leadership of Graduate Office

  • Provide oversight of Graduate Studies Administrator in development and implementation of community building experiences and practices 
  • Oversee the planning and organization of Graduate Orientation experiences
  • Manage budget and data needs for NSF/GRFP Fellowships, OGS Fellowships (including Continuance Grants) and GEM Fellowships
  • Provide oversight of Graduate Student Government
  • Supervise and manage the Graduate Studies Administrator
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience
  • Experience with academic management and administration of graduate education policies
  • Experience with one-on-one graduate student services and advising
  • Experience with graduate curriculum, including both traditional and interdisciplinary graduate programs
  • Ability to balance and prioritize the needs from multiple Mines offices/entities, such as Graduate Admissions, Registrar, academic departments, Graduate Council, Faculty Senate and Academic Affairs
  • Commitment to providing high-quality customer service and ability to work independently and as a team member
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD from an accredited institution 
  • Experience working in higher education administration and with graduate programs
  • Experience providing administrative leadership and program management
