Position Title: Instructional/Educational Technologist
The Opportunity:

The Educational/Instructional Technologist position supports and administers a broad portfolio of educational/instructional technologies to enhance learning (including online learning) at Mines. As a member of the educational technology team, the Educational/Instructional Technologist will support and administer the learning management system (Canvas LMS) and other integrated tools that enhance the learning environment (online and residinetial) at Mines. This position will promote and communicate best practices in the adoption and use of technologies while providing exceptional support and user experiences to students, instructors and staff. The Educational/Instructional Technologist will serve as a catalyst to grow and advance online education by collaborating with stakeholders to investigate, test and integrate new and proven technologies that will continue to differentiate Mines as a leader in educating STEM students and professionals in an online environment. The position requires an understanding of instructional design theory, while focusing on the underlying technologies that enable and enhance the online learning experience for students and instructors.

Responsibilities:

Learning Management Support:

  • Provide technical and operational support for online learners, instructors and instructional designers who use the campus learning management system (Canvas LMS by Instructure).
  • Support pedagogical best practices as they relate to the use of Canvas LMS features and functions.
  • Provide oversight of Canvas-supported tier 1 requests to ensure Mines is receiving timely and accurate vendor support. When appropriate, provide tier 2 support for Canvas requests.
  • Support, troubleshoot and resolve issues with Canvas LTI integrations.
  • Identify, test, integrate and support new LTI integrations that facilitate additional opportunities for learners to communicate, collaborate, engage and increase their productivity in the online environment.
  • Identify, create, implement and document process-improvement plans that promote automation to increase operational efficiency of the Canvas environment and related auxiliary systems.
  • Develop workflows, scripts and applications that leverage Canvas APIs, Canvas data and other Mines data sources to automate routine tasks.
  • Create, manage and communicate LMS standards, policies and procedures to campus stakeholders.

Instructional Technology Support:

  • Provide frontline support for a variety of educational technologies and related hardware and software components. This includes technologies.  such as Zoom, Iclicker, Piazza, EvaluationKit, etc.
  • Consult with instructors to understand high-level needs and specific requirements, and translate those into operational plans that identify new technologies or adapt existing technologies.
  • Create and communicate plans and procedures that convey use-case scenarios, detailed testing, implementation and support considerations for new and innovative education technology solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to extend existing Mines technology solutions in new and innovative ways to more fully utilize existing resources.
  • Lead periodic educational technology reviews of existing solutions to ensure they are effective, efficient and relevant to the online learning initiatives.

Other Essential responsibilities: 

  • Serve as a technical liaison for Canvas and other educational technologies in interdepartmental projects.
  • Stay current with best practices and emerging technologies in the educational technology field.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in computer science, instructional technology or closely related field. Individuals without a degree may be considered if they demonstrate possession of substantially the same knowledge level as found in a degree, but have attained the advanced knowledge through a combination of work experience and intellectual instruction.
  • Experience supporting and administering a learning management system, preferably Canvas.
  • Demonstrable ability to learn and support new learning technologies.
  • Ability to leverage existing technologies in creative ways to support teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrable experience with LTI integrations into LMS systems.
  • Experience in a customer support role requiring good interpersonal relations skills to interact with a diverse client base.
  • Demonstrable experience and technical support of digital technologies in an academic environment.
  • Experience with web content accessibility guidelines and additional accessibility standards, accommodations and voluntary product accessibility templates reviews.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a higher education environment supporting online teaching and learning on a global scale.
  • Experience with programming, scripting and web development to create unique experiences and/or provide more efficient workflows/processes for faculty and students.
  • Experience with SCORM, xAPI , Caliper Data and other IMS Global standards.
  • Understand the instructional design methods.
  • Understanding of audiovisual technologies, multimedia tools, computer hardware/software and basic networking.
  • Knowledge of ITIL and service management concepts and processes.
  • Experience evaluating large data sets for completeness, accuracy and consistency.
