Position Title: Banner Developer 
The Opportunity:

The Banner Developer position functions as the recognized expert for the proper configuration, implementation and operation of the Ellucian Banner system.  Colorado School of Mines is currently seeking two Developers – one to focus on HR and one to focus on Financial Aid.  The position is required to operate as a project lead and is relied upon to provide technical guidance, direction and instruction to management, peers and administration departments (Financial Aid, Human Resources, Payroll, Budget, etc.) on the proper analysis, design, development, testing, implementation, maintenance and support of Banner and integrated systems.  This entails working closely with functional users to identify needs and problems, translating requirements into technical specifications, and developing innovative solutions utilizing Banner administrative and self-service applications, enterprise content management (ECM), Mines web portal, and third-party systems/applications to support and enhance business operations.  This requires application of best-practice and established system analysis, design and programming concepts, principles and standards.  This position also provides Level 1 support for other Banner modules. 

Candidate evaluation will begin on February 24, 2020.

Responsibilities:

Banner Support

  • Analyze and evaluate business needs, policies and procedures, federal and state regulations and requirements, available resources and tools, vendor releases and roadmaps, etc. to plan, design, specify guidelines and implement new programs, changes and operating procedures.  Specify implementation project scope and objectives.  Develop project plans, priorities and schedules to implement agreed upon objectives. 
  • Develop and maintain Banner customizations, system integrations and interfaces between Banner and third-party systems/applications.
  • Set up and monitor scheduled production jobs to streamline business processes and ensure reliable system operation.
  • Review Banner upgrades and patches to determine their applicability and impact on existing processes and procedures.  Coordinate installation in both test and production environments with functional users, manager and DBAs, and assist users in developing effective test plans.
  • Work with functional users in other administration departments to:
    • Understand their needs, priorities and schedules 
    • Help them use existing system functionality, as well as available resources and tools
    • Troubleshoot problems and find solutions
    • Recommend new systems, processes and procedures to meet business requirements
    • Document methods and establish guidelines to resolve mission-critical operational issues.
    • Analyze, configure, code, test, implement and document new system functionality and enhancements
  • Work with other developers and IT staff on team projects and shared tasks, and to analyze, diagnose and resolve issues.

System Integrations and Software Implementations

  • Work closely with project teams, subject matter experts (SMEs) and data stewards to create project plans, requirement specifications and data sharing agreements.
  • Participate in implementation meetings and discussions with vendors.
  • Coordinate all technical requirements and tasks with the appropriate IT staff.
  • Design, develop, and test integrations/interfaces as defined in the agreed-upon requirements.
  • Create technical and user documentation of the integrations/interfaces.

Other duties as assigned 

  • Develop and maintain technical and user documentation of Banner custom jobs, scheduled processes and interfaces/integrations to ensure business continuity, and work after hours or weekends as needed to assist with mission-critical or time-sensitive processing issues.
  • Provide Level 1 support for other Banner modules and assist the Business Intelligence team with data cleanup and automating Operation Data Store (ODS) extracts using the Mines enterprise job scheduler.
  • On occasion, this position may be assigned other duties needed to help drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and uphold Mines’ and the Department’s organizational values. 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a field closely related to computer science required. Individuals without a degree may be considered if they demonstrate possession of similar knowledge and proficiency obtained through a combination of work experience and intellectual instruction.
  • Demonstrated proficiency at a moderate level with relational database management systems (Oracle and/or MS-SQL Server), Oracle PL/SQL, and at least one other procedural programming language.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience with Linux operating system.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively with others and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills and ability to communicate effectively with both technical staff and non-technical users.
  • Demonstrated skills to diagnose and resolve technical problems independently.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, and with changing priorities and multiple projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Technical and functional knowledge and experience with Ellucian's ERP software (Banner).
  • Experience working in Higher Education.
  • Experience with Automic Enterprise Job Scheduler.
  • Experience with source code control and versioning systems, such as Git and Subversion.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming languages and web technologies such as Java, Groovy, JavaScript, HTML, XML and CSS.
  • Experience with Enterprise Content Management systems (i.e. Hyland OnBase).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Interest in keeping abreast of current and emerging technology.
