Position Title: Academic Advising Coordinator
The Opportunity: The Center for Academic Services and Advising (CASA) seeks a student-focused, equity-minded professional to join the team as an Academic Advising Coordinator.  Under the direction of the Associate Director for the Center for Academic Services & Advising, the Academic Advising Coordinator will support the academic progression of Mines students via holistic and developmental academic advising. In addition, the Coordinator will administer various academic support services, retention efforts, and supplemental instruction offerings in collaboration with academic faculty and administration. Broadly, the Academic Advising Coordinator will uphold established national standards for academic advising and academic support whilst upholding the mission of Colorado School of Mines. This is a full time, 12-month, administrative faculty professional exempt position.

Academic Advising 

  • Provide academic advisement for undergraduate students in their first and second year at Mines.
  • Routine communication & outreach (individual and group) with a pre-assigned set of students (approximately 500).
  • Accurate and timely assistance/guidance with course planning, registration, and class scheduling.
  • Review, approve, and assist with class scheduling, including the release of PINs with students.
  • Individualized assistance/guidance to all students, including those with complex transcripts (this would include students with AP/IB advanced credit, transfer students, non-traditional, and more).
  • Consistent and thorough record keeping of all student contact and advisement. This would include pre- and post-advising session notes.
  • Proactive & reactive communication to academic faculty in need of assistance & support for advising purposes – including upper division advising assistance.
  • Assistance with transition as a student progresses to their identified and declared major(s).
  • When necessary, assistance and support to student families and prospective student/families.
  • Abide by FERPA and privacy regulations with all confidential student material and when working with parents and families of students.
  • Provide personalized assistance – based in student development theory and support – with any student need, exploration, or situation. This includes collaboration and outreach to support offices.
  • Provide proactive & reactive communication to academic faculty in need of assistance & support for academic support purposes.
  • Represent the University to various institutional divisions by serving on various university ad hoc committees as well as externally to students and/or the general public/local community.
  • Assist as needed with all Student Life and CLASS programs, events, and specialty weekends.

Tutoring and Core Review Management 

  • Coordinator will oversee the Tutoring and Core Review Sessions program management, including recruiting and hiring student staff, development and delivery of training, and supervision and management of the tutors and Core Review peer educators.
  • Coordination also includes management and oversight of all associated outreach, programming, and instructional materials.
  • Under oversight of CASA leadership, coordination includes management of the tutoring payroll and operating budget. 
  • Coordination also includes collaborative work with campus including Residence Life, Student Activities, Involvement, & Leadership, Faculty in CASA, etc.

Academic Coaching

  • Offer individualized and research-backed academic coaching assistance to students seeking to improve their academic performance at Mines.
  • Provide proactive academic coaching for assigned advisees as well as other students as caseload allows.
  • Respond to CARE inquiries for advisees and offer academic support as needed.

Other duties as assigned 

On occasion, this position may be assigned other duties needed to help drive to the vision, fulfill the mission, and uphold Mines’ and the Department’s organizational values.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors’ and masters’ degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Professional experience with college students in an advising, mentoring, or leadership role.
  • Professional oral and written communication skills, strong organizational and project management skills, strong public speaking skills, and proficiency with computer software.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience with Tutoring or Supplemental Instruction (SI)
  • A masters’ degree in a relevant field such as higher education administration, educational leadership, educational psychology, curriculum and development, etc.
  • Employment as a full-time academic advisor and/or academic support or student support specialist in a college or university setting.
  • Advising or teaching experience with an engineering/applied science setting.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity of perspective.
  • Experience supervising employed (defined as paid) students.
