Position Title: Online Learning Experience Technologist
Job Description:

The Colorado School of Mines (Mines) Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning is seeking an Online Learning Experience Technologist (OLET) who will collaborate with faculty, industry experts, educational researchers and educational specialists to develop adaptive instructional materials, online modules, and online courses as part of a three-year NSF funded project. Working with the project team, the OLET will produce online self-study, moderated, and facilitated asynchronous modules that form learning pathways for targeted industries in Advanced Manufacturing. The experienced designer should be proficient in using rapid authoring tools, such as Adobe Captivate and/or Storyline 360, to develop dynamic interactive, accessible multimedia instruction in HTML5. The successful candidate must be creative, adaptive, and energetic, and must be able to translate instructional directions from storyboards into courseware. In addition, the OLET will also be responsible for building, testing and implementing in our learning management system (LMS), currently Canvas. This role requires the ability to expertly handle e-Learning applications to produce high quality content. This position reports to the Center Director and will work with the project team to produce content that will be studied, refined, and then implemented in four distinct settings (1. industry, 2. self-study, 3. 2-year institutions (Colorado Community College Online and Red Rocks Community College) and 4. at Mines).

This is a two-year, research-funded appointment, with the possibility of extending the position based on additional grants or funding. Working remotely for candidates who are not in the local Denver area may be considered. Our preference is to have someone on campus working with the team.

  • Work in collaboration with content faculty and pedagogy experts (Trefny Center faculty), develop strategies for designing and integrating adaptive and/or competency-based content into a learning management system or website using eLearning authoring tools such as Adobe Captivate, Animate and/or Articulate Storyline or web-based technologies such as HTLM5. 
  • Lead the conceptual design and build of new online modules, activities, assessments, and interactions in collaboration with faculty and Trefny Center faculty.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of eLearning development principles, and how those may affect the strategy used to build a specific interaction.
  • Work closely with the research team in choosing varying designs and approaches to test in the varying settings.
  • Implement Mines’ established online course design and facilitation standards.
  • Use the Mines’ style guide in the design and development phase for color scheme, graphic design, and functionality for online content being produced.
  • Collaborate with quality assurance specialists in all phases of the development and review cycle to build high-quality online content.
  • Adhere to institutional and national copyright, security, and privacy policies, including FERPA.
  • Work closely with the other Trefny Center faculty in supporting innovations in teaching and learning at Mines. 
  • Develop and produce reports utilizing data and analysis related to the online modules. 
  • Perform other related duties and assignments as required and as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Masters’ in relevant field is required. Six (6) or more years of experience can be substituted for the Masters’ degree with a Bachelors’ in a relevant field.
  • Three (3) or more years of relevant work experience developing quality courseware.
  • Experience with rapid e-Learning authoring tools, such as Adobe Captivate, Animate, Articulate Storyline, Camtasia, and/or other SCORM compliant authoring tools to develop system simulations and adaptive or competency-based learning modules. Proficiency in more than one development software is desired.
  • Experience in utilizing virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) as part of online courses or modules.
  • Experience in developing and integrating e-Learning assets, open educational resources, and adaptive lessons into multiple eLearning environments. This includes graphics, animations, simulations, assessments, interactive games, and other learning tools using a wide range of technologies.
  • Knowledge of Learning Management System (LMS) workflows, including beta/alpha/usability testing and eLearning distribution. Experience with CANVAS is desired.
  • Knowledge and experience with a learning record store (LRS) systems.
  • Experience with HTML5, JavaScript, CSS, SCORM, and xAPI.
  • Knowledge of universal and inclusive design practices.
  • Experience in using the Adobe Creative suite of tools.
  • Candidate must have excellent communication skills, with the ability to receive and convey information clearly and concisely for various mediums.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with productivity tools (Microsoft Office Suite, Google G Suite, iWork, Open Office, Dropbox, etc.).
  • Must have strong organizational skills and the proven ability to work concurrently on multiple tasks with short turnaround time, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work, and anticipate needs while operating in a fast-paced, pro-active customer service environment is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience, skills, and/or knowledge of instructional systems design processes.
  • Ability to teach/train other employees how to develop learning content using eLearning authoring tools.
  • Knowledge of administrative/office procedures with a flexible collaborative attitude and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Enthusiasm for evidenced-based instruction and creative problem-solving growth mindsets.
  • Demonstrated initiative and the ability to establish priorities, show initiative in day-to-day activities, solve problems appropriately and work efficiently.
