Position Title: Backup and Restoration System Administrator
The Opportunity:

This position administers the backup and recovery infrastructure and associated information technology systems within the division of Information and Technology Solutions (ITS).  ITS provides support for enterprise, departmental and research servers as well as the institution’s HPC systems.  As the System Administrator – Backup and Recovery, this position provides system administration services including monitoring daily alert logs, disk space management, security overview and protection, networking management, license management, and OS maintenance as related to backups, disaster recovery, test plans and other business systems. 

The Backup Administrator will be primarily responsible for managing the daily activities ensuring the security and integrity of Mines data, databases, servers and applications. This job includes gathering requirements and assisting with the design, recommendation and implementation of on-premise and cloud-based backup and recovery platforms. This person is also responsible for making improvements to the existing systems to optimize and improve the reliability and availability of recovery technologies. Additionally, candidates will be responsible for participating in Disaster Recovery tabletop exercises on a regular basis and for participating in building and redesigning a Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Program/Plan.

Responsibilities:
  • Configure, administer and maintain the Mines backup environment, including software, infrastructure and storage. Monitor and control all backup operations. Must back up the critical backend databases of systems including Oracle and MS SQL databases utilizing the enterprise backup software (Veeam). Generate and validate automated reports and regularly conducts restore tests at all levels, from file restores to complete servers. Working with the system administration team, advise on backup strategies, solutions, business continuity and disaster recovery, and the evolution of the backup and recovery environment.
  • Develop a comprehensive backup and recovery plan including performing semi-annual table top exercise to demonstrate validity of program.
  • Planning the Storage, Backup, and Security strategy, including ownership for all data classification and their respective RPO and RTO goals.
  • Provide oversight to Mines IT in backup and storage platform optimization, monitoring and lifecycle management/roadmap.
  • Gather requirements and assist with the implementation of on-premise and cloud-based storage and backup solutions.
  • Manage enterprise scale backup systems including VMWARE, Veeam, and Cohesity.
  • Accountable for technology roadmaps related to backup technologies.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues related to backup workloads.
  • Perform a variety of system administration as required (Linux and Windows). Encompasses enterprise and departmental servers and systems; including user account management, monitoring daily alert logs, disk space management, security overview and protection, networking, and OS and application installation and updates as related to backups, disaster recovery, test plans and other.  
  • Plan, design, document, and implement guidelines, rules, operational procedures, and standards to be used with enterprise systems and application servers to ensure reliable performance and use with respect to backup and DR and other business systems as necessary.  Determine and assure adequate procedures are applied consistently across all systems in order to accomplish ITS service goals.  Assure existing vendor-based standards are followed and replicate these as much as possible across all systems. 
  • Coordinate, cooperate and interact with other ITS staff to provide support for requested backup and restoration and other system administration requests as needed.  
  • Recommend and implement hardware and software upgrades, additions, and/or replacements to support the needs of the departments and users of the system.  Coordinate and work with other campus staff and vendors to accomplish above tasks.  Thoroughly document design, implementation, modifications, and ongoing maintenance of the systems. Must be ready and able to aid in a wide variety of technical and policy related tasks as the need arises. 

The employee in this position is expected to help ensure the 7x24 operation of the institution’s IT infrastructure.  This includes minimizing the impact of downtime required for maintenance by occasionally scheduling work for off-hours or weekends as well as responding to after-hours outages. Participate in calls with other members to address and troubleshoot application and or infrastructure related issues. 

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in computer science or a field closely related to computer science.  Individuals without a degree may be considered if they demonstrate possession of substantially the same knowledge level as found in a degree, but have attained the advanced knowledge through a combination of work experience and intellectual instruction.
  • Five or more years’ experience working with backup software and techniques, preferably Veeam Enterprise software and underlying required infrastructure configuration and storage, including VMWare.
  • Knowledge and experience in Cloud (Office 365 and AWS) platforms, including experience backing up Office 365/Exchange, Azure and AWS environments.
  • Progressive, team-based experience performing system administration.  
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior IT experience working in higher education.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft OS and experience with Windows configuration, administration, and monitoring.  Willingness to learn how to provide basic support and integration with Unix/Linux operating systems.
  • Hands on knowledge of data protection & disaster recovery technologies.
  • Knowledge of Active Directory and domain administration as well as Group Policies.
  • Experience using scripting and programming languages, such as PowerShell and Bash.
  • Experience working with VMware Enterprise virtualization environment design and operation, including basic technical architecture knowledge of VMware virtualization and related infrastructure and storage technologies.
  • Experience managing a variety of storage platforms including Dell Compellent and Dell Data Domain.
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP networking protocols and principles.
  • Experience supporting medium enterprise IT environments including team-based enterprise system administration practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of information security and privacy best practices and principles.
  • Facility to assist project teams with technical issues in the Initiation and Planning phases of our standard Project Management Methodology.
  • Ability to develop and maintain technical relationships / partnerships with customers, suppliers, peers, partners and team members to execute on projects.
  • Experience working with multi-tiered service request (IT ticket) systems.
