Focus Areas:

Aligned with the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) emphasis on Earth, Energy and Environment, the institution is focused on addressing major societal challenges at the intersection of its traditionally strong disciplinary tracks. To strengthen these efforts, Mines has initiated a search to recruit highly talented interdisciplinary faculty in support of its highly regarded Materials Science program and its recently launched Quantum Engineering program, which is one of the first in the United States, leveraging existing strengths in applied physics and math, materials and computer sciences, and electrical and mechanical engineering. 

We invite applications from candidates with expertise across the broad areas of Quantum Information, Electronic Materials and Devices. Candidates who have demonstrated the potential for conducting high impact research and teaching are highly desired. The successful candidates will be housed in various departments across campus where they best fit for teaching and research synergies, and joint appointments will be considered as appropriate. 

Specific interests for this cluster include multiple positions in and across the related areas of:

  • Quantum Information (theory and experiment). Expertise in quantum information theory and/or experimentation of all types is of interest. Expertise in open quantum systems, fabrication/testing of quantum devices, quantum sensing, quantum complexity and/or quantum computing will complement existing strengths. Quantum neuromorphic computing approaches and materials exhibiting/hosting entanglement and/or non-classical states are also of strong interest. 

  • Integrated Electronics with a focus on materials, devices, and/or circuits that can further Mines strengths in Earth, Energy, and Environment. In particular, MEMS or III-V semiconductor-based circuits and devices utilizing novel materials and/or (potentially additive) manufacturing techniques are of interest, as are the design and development of new materials for application to low-temperature circuits for quantum applications, as well as advanced circuit and device modeling and simulation capabilities, including machine learning, for computer aided design and design optimization. 

  • Functional and/or Quantum Materials with particular interest in fabrication, integration, and/or simulation of piezoelectrics, ferroelectrics, multiferroics, thermoelectrics, etc., and/or materials that exhibit non-classical states or non-trivial coupling.

Research in any of the areas covered by this cluster offers opportunities for strong collaborations across campus, with national labs such as the nearby National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) and National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), and industry partners. Mines looks to attract multiple excellent scientists or engineers who can collaborate broadly; establish a research group and attract funding that supports interdisciplinary research; grow graduate offerings in the Materials Science and/or Quantum Engineering graduate programs; build opportunities for distinctive undergraduate education; and strengthen collaborations with national laboratory and industry partners around the world.

  • Develop and deliver course materials to undergraduate and graduate students in traditional, hybrid, and online platforms
  • Supervise MS and PhD degree students.
  • Establish and/or maintain a quality publication record.
  • Develop a strong externally-funded research program.
  • Contribute both institutionally and professionally through active service.
  • Cultivate and promote an inclusive and diverse Mines community through recruiting, mentorship, and service.
  • Collaborate across campus in the area of Electronic and Quantum Engineering. 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in a related discipline from an accredited program by the time the appointment begins.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and curriculum development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Assistant Professor candidates must possess academic, research lab, and/or industry experience and accomplishments in a related field.
  • Associate and Full Professor candidates should have similar credentials as Assistant Professor candidates as well as national distinction and a substantial record in research, teaching and/or service. In addition, Full Professor candidates should have an established international reputation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Successful record of teaching and research obtained via academic research, college-level teaching and/or industry or national lab experience.
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion and accessibility.
  • Demonstrated success in securing externally funded grants/contracts for those applying at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Demonstrated record of research publications in archival journals and conference proceedings. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional external service in the candidate’s discipline.
