Position Title: Senior Network Engineer
The Opportunity:

This position administers computer and data networking technology within the Infrastructure Solutions department (IS) in the division of Information Technology Solutions (ITS). As a senior network engineer this position performs administration and support for all link, network and transport layer functions for the campus including wired and wireless Ethernet, switch configuration and patch management, IPv4/6 routing, firewall, VPN, DNS and related technologies. Additional responsibilities for this employee include maintaining an awareness and implementation of industry best practices and procedures, ensuring maximum availability and security of the school's data network, and assisting the campus leadership in efforts to ensure compliance with industry regulations, procedures and standards.


Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborate with department leaders to assess near- and long-term network capacity needs.
  • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to network configuration, network mapping, processes, and service records.
  • Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures, and associated training plans for network administration, usage, and disaster recovery.
  • Proactively identify risks in the network and develop a plan to mitigate them
  • Leads / Supports numerous business requirements for networking and data communications.
  • Prepare technical proposals for presentation to the leadership team for adding new technologies to the network.

 Acquisition & Development

  • Design and deploy company LANs, WANs, and wireless networks, including servers, routers, firewalls, switches, and other hardware.
  • Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments in the networking industry.
  • Oversee new and existing equipment, hardware, and software upgrades.
  • Participate in evaluation of new network technologies and makes recommendations to the infrastructure solutions team regarding the integration of these technologies into the existing network.
  • Evaluate and recommend COTS products and methodologies that can be acquired to provide interoperable, portable, and scalable information technology solutions.
  • Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure network products and services in collaboration with the ITS Vendor Management Team.

Operational Management

  • Configure networks to ensure their smooth and reliable operation for fulfilling the university’s objectives and processes.
  • Ensure these systems and applications are compliant with standards for open systems architectures, reference models, and profiles of standards - such as the IEEE Open Systems Environment (OSE) reference model - as they apply to the implementation and specification of Information Management solutions on the application platform, across the application program interface (API), and the external environment/software application.
  • Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
  • Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.
  • Participate in managing all network security solutions.
  • Perform network and data communication audits, and backups and recovery.
  • Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team.
  • Perform routine and specialized administration for the campus data network environment including firewall, routing and switch configuration, maintenance and support for Domain Name Services, IP address space management, DHCP, wireless, and associated technologies.
  • Coordinate, cooperate and interact with other ITS staff, particularly front-line user support staff (e.g., service desk, User Experience Support, Lab Team) to provide second level (tier-2 and tier-3) support for users. Specifically providing advanced help with diagnosing and debugging client-side issues, supplying network configuration information and notifying support staff when networking issues might directly impact end-users.
  • Participate and occasionally lead projects to upgrade or deploy systems or technologies. These projects will include both the implementation of vendor provided software as well as the development of customized software.
  • Monitor network connectivity and performance. Diagnose and debug problems and resolve or initiate resolutions. This includes implementing and maintaining appropriate monitoring tools.
  • Create and maintain documentation of all work performed so that others can follow his or her directions when performing maintenance on systems built or administered by the employee. The employee must also be able to interpret the documentation created by other members of the team.
  • Create end-user documentation including web pages, knowledge-base articles, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Help ensure the 24x7 operation of the institution's IT infrastructure. This includes minimizing the impact of downtime required for maintenance by occasionally scheduling work for off-hours or weekends as well as responding to after-hours outages.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • On occasion, this position may be assigned other duties needed to help drive to the vision, fulfill the mission, and uphold Mines’ and the Department’s organizational values.
  • The employee in this position must be ready and able to aid in a wide variety of technical and policy related tasks as the need arises.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required, in computer science, information technology, networking or a closely related field.  Individuals without a degree may be considered if they demonstrate possession of substantially the same knowledge level as found in a degree but have attained the advanced knowledge through a combination of work experience and intellectual instruction.
  • Candidate must have a total of 12 years of applicable experience. 8+ years' experience in managing sophisticated computer networks and 4+ years' experience in network architecture and deployment.
  • Advanced networking qualifications including MPLS, BGP, OSPF, LAN/WLANMAN/WAN/Optical specialization
  •  Utilization of common ticketing systems (TeamDynamix, Remedy, ServiceNow) and common network management tools.
  • Must have hands on troubleshooting skills and fault isolation of IT business systems.
  • Must have a strong understanding of the OSI model and configuration of routing protocols such as EIGRP, OSPF, MPLS, BGP, LDP
  • Must have Link Layer expertise with:
    • Wired protocols including IEEE 802.3 and 802.1q
    • Cisco/IOS switch configuration
    • Wireless protocols 802.11[b/g/n/ac/ax]
  • Must have working technical knowledge of current network hardware, network protocols, and transport layer standards and protocols including
    • Ethernet, IPv4 and familiarity with IPv6
    • Dynamic and static routing
    • Dynamic and Static Host Configuration
  • Must have expert knowledge of the following security technologies:
    • Stateful firewall configuration
    • Intrusion Detection/Prevention technologies
    • Access Control List and port filtering
  • Proven experience and success with LAN, WAN, WLAN, and WWAN design and implementation.
  • Proven experience with network capacity planning, network security principles, and general network management best practices.
  • Strong, hands-on technical knowledge of network operating systems
  • Excellent hardware troubleshooting experience.
  • Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in higher education is preferred.
  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certificate preferred
  • CompTIA networking certifications preferred
  • Knowledge of the following Network Management and Support software:
    • Arista CloudVision
    • Cisco Prime Infrastructure
    • Aruba Airwave
    • CheckMK
    • FlowTools
    • Wireshark
  • VoIP protocols and technologies
  • Project management
  • Information Security and privacy best practices and principles
  • Operating Systems support
    • Configuration of network parameters in Microsoft, Mac and Linux OS
  • Shell Scripting/Programming
