Position Title: Public Information Specialist
The Opportunity The Public Information Specialist works as a part of the Communications and Marketing team. This position focuses on promoting Colorado School of Mines to external audiences and the media as well as providing information and communications support to internal stakeholders. This position has a key role in supporting emergency communications. This is a varied role in a fast-paced environment. 

1) Internal Communications:  Write and edit submissions for the Daily Blast email, website, and regularly occurring newsletters (The Blaster Bulletin, Mines Climbs Together, etc.). Participate in regular story and strategy meetings, taking an ownership stake in setting tone of internal communications, considering and selecting topics and news of note for prominent placement and more. Work closely with colleagues in office and in Student Life and other areas to ensure parents and families are considered and included in campus communications. Monitor and update campus calendar, as needed.

2) External Communications:  Update the Mines Newsroom and other websites. Write news stories and announcements. Maintain media contact list and pitch stories to the news media as appropriate. Respond to media inquiries, verbally or through written statements, and connect faculty with reporters. Build and maintain a Mines Experts website. Select photos to promote stories online and in print. Provide back-up on social media communications. May monitor and mentor student workers.

3) Emergency Communications:  Serve as part of campus-wide communications team. Prepare draft emergency messages. Provide messaging support as needed during closures and emergencies. Send messages through the Mines Alert System as needed. Update the Mines home page and social media accounts in an emergency. Build and maintain the Emergency Information website.

4) Creative Project and Marketing Support: Join teammates in providing creative input, editorial and other support for office and campus projects. 


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related field. Work experience in a closely related field will be considered on a year-for-year basis. 
  • Professional experience in writing and editing
  • Proficient computer skills, including desktop publishing, website maintenance, applications and newsletter management

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in emergency communications
  • Professional experience in media and/or media relations
  • Excellent proofreading skills, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and their uses in organizational communications
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Sensitivity to confidentiality
  • Ability to function effectively with others across the institution and with external constituents and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
