Position Title: Plant/Capital Accountant 
The Opportunity:

The position performs high level accounting functions in the Controller’s Office for the campus community.  The General Accounting team provides financial support for all campus departments through cost transfers, fund balance and budget balance monitoring, and ad-hoc financial reporting. The significant duties for this position include accounting for capital projects, plant and equipment assets of the School, providing support on the recording of capital projects in the State’s financial system; conducting the annual physical inventory of the School’s property records; developing procedures for the campus to follow, related to recording, reporting and tracking equipment inventory; and working with Capital Planning and Construction to ensure funding is properly identified and recorded on capital projects.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct accounting support to Capital Planning and Construction to ensure project budgets and costs are properly approved and recorded in the finance system, and projects are closed out on a timely basis. 
  • Develop and provide training on capitalization policies, forms and processes to ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations. 
  • Ensure equipment purchased with Federal, State, Grant, and other funds are properly accounted for in accordance with regulations.
  • Prepare documentation and financial system entries to record capital asset transactions, including construction in progress, asset purchases, transfers, disposals and donations. 
  • Perform various research tasks relative to plant fund accounting transactions and other direct accounting support and financial projects as required to campus departments. 
  • Provide support to administrative and academic departments to ensure physical inventory and the annual certifications are complete and include all new asset purchases, disposals and transfers, and the results are submitted and reported to the Controller by the required deadlines.  Responsibilities also include updating and maintaining the database records using this information. 
  • Provide timely and accurate audit schedules and assist with providing required documentation during various audits. 
  • Work with Campus departments to complete the Space Survey which is used in the preparation of the School’s federal cost allocation plan. 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related area.  Individuals without a degree may be considered if they demonstrate possession of substantially the same knowledge level as found in a degree, but have attained the advanced knowledge through a combination of work experience and intellectual instruction.
  • Experience with ERP systems and spreadsheet applications
  • Experience with accounting for and recording capital assets, including monthly depreciation entries, disposals and physical inventory.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with cross functional teams
  • Ability to communicate effectively on a one-on-one basis and understand the needs of campus departments
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, multi-task and organize workflow to complete assigned tasks within established deadlines
  • Acts as a liaison between general accounting and academic and non-academic departments, assisting with interpretation of financial information, resolution of issues, and training
  • Strong working knowledge of fund accounting structures and accounting rules related to each fund category
  • Clarity in written and verbal communications
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite including but not limited
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Public Accountant
  • Experience with Banner financial software, PeopleSoft, or other similar Oracle-based financial system;
  • Experience with databases and spreadsheet applications including Access and Excel;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with project teams.
  • Familiarity with the State of Colorado public higher education financial and accounting processes;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP, GASB and State requirements related to plant fund accounting;
  • Demonstrated experience with account analysis and reconciliations, monthly and year-end close tasks.     
  • 3-5 years of capital asset experience
