Teaching Faculty or Professor of Practice - Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering & Department of Chemistry
The Opportunity
The Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) and Chemistry Departments at the Colorado School of Mines invite applications for a Teaching Faculty or Professor of Practice to lead Energy Sustainability efforts including the online Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) certificate program. While there is a preference for faculty in energy sustainability including carbon capture utilization and storage, excellent candidates in all research areas related to Chemical and Biological Engineering or Chemistry will be considered. We seek candidates excited to share in our mission to address the challenges of creating a sustainable global society by educating the next generation of engineers and leaders, and by expanding the frontiers of knowledge through research. We are especially interested in candidates with a passion to advance the University’s commitment to diversity.
Responsibilities
  • Manage and teach courses within the recently launched online CCUS graduate certificate program
  • Work effectively in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment within the Departments and across the Mines campus.
  • Develop and deliver course materials to students in face-to-face and potentially hybrid and online formats demonstrating teaching excellence.
  • Mentor and advise students.
  • Contribute both institutionally and professionally through active service.
  • Cultivate and promote an inclusive and diverse Mines community through recruiting, mentorship, and service.
Minimum Qualifications

Teaching Assistant Professor

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science or a closely related field. 
  • Teaching Assistant Professor:  Potential for excellence in teaching and educational service with 0-3 years of experience.
  • Teaching Associate Professor: 3-7 years of demonstrated teaching excellence and evidence of educational service.
  • Teaching Full Professor: 7 plus years of demonstrated teaching excellence, evidence of educational service and leadership, and application of educational research.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and curriculum development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Communicates effectively among co-workers, students, administration, and other constituents. 
  • Pedagogical content knowledge, general pedagogical knowledge content knowledge of the specific discipline, and instructional technology knowledge. 
  • The potential to become an excellent teacher and mentor.
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Professor of Practice

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science or a closely related field. 
  • 0-5+ years college-level teaching experience. Industry experience may substitute for years of teaching experience.
  • History of professional experience with a national or international reputation demonstrating achievement as a distinguished practitioner of the discipline.
  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD or other research experience related to sustainability including not limited to carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS).
  • Prior teaching experience.

Department Description

The CBE and Chemistry faculty tend to work collaboratively, and successful candidates are expected to interact with multiple researchers in the department and across the Mines campus.  Both department have strengths in multiple areas including energy, materials, biological and biomedical engineering, transport, biochemistry, catalysis and complex fluids.  The faculty collaborate extensively with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, located minutes from Mines, as well as several other regional federal laboratories involved in energy research and development. The Colorado Fuel Cell Center is a collaborative center at Mines dedicated to improving the efficiency of chemical energy conversion, as well as adapting fuel cell technology for compatibility with emerging biofuels. The CBE department houses the world’s foremost center dedicated to understanding the critical role of hydrates in energy production as well as their potential for energy storage and CO2 sequestration. The department also hosts the Colorado Institute for Energy, Materials and Computational Science (CIEMACS), which focuses on problems at the nexus of energy, materials and scientific computing. The Mines Polymers and Complex Fluids (MPAC) group brings together faculty from CBE and the Chemistry Department to focus on fundamental and applied research in soft matter.  The Chemistry Department has extensive background in materials development, and directs the DoE-HFTO HyMARC Energy Materials Network, which advances hydrogen storage from cradle to grave from materials development, to TEA, to deployment to recycle.

Pay Range

Mines is offering an academic year salary of: 

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering - $85,000 - $118,000
Department of Chemistry - $64,000 - $102,000

Mines takes into consideration the home department and rank as well as a combination of the candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
