Job Description:

Colorado School of Mines is undertaking a DARPA-funded R&D project to develop and demonstrate near-surface rapid tunneling technology. This technology has the potential to revolutionize subsurface transportation for both military and civil use. Mines is seeking a talented experienced research engineer to play a key role in this project. The R&D project will marry concepts and technologies from pipeline horizontal directional drilling and oil & gas directional drilling with novel mechanical, construction, geotechnical and fluids concepts and technologies.

We are seeking to hire a research engineer/scientist with experience and interest in applied/experimental soil behavior and experimental mechanics related to soil erosion, jetting erosion of soils, jet grouting, dredging mechanics, soil modification/ground improvement, soil drilling, fluid fracking of soils. Qualified applicants that lack these specific areas of experience yet have a strong background in experimental soil behavior/mechanics/hydraulics are also encouraged to apply. Experience with embedded instrumentation, field testing, soil bed testing, etc., is also desired.

This is a soft money position, intended for a multi-year duration. The initial contract supporting this position has been secured for 15 months. We anticipate continued support both from defense and civilian sources for continuation.

The position is scheduled to begin October 1, and is available for 15 months with possible extension and promotion. The position supports the advancement of ultra-rapid tunneling in the near surface. Such advancement can revolutionize subsurface transportation, and bring profound improvements to urban sustainability and resilience. 

  • Develop, from conceptual design through construction and in partnership with mechanical, drilling and instrumentation engineers, a horizontal drilling laboratory setup to examine hydraulic and mechanical drilling/jetting through soils.
  • Develop methodology for preparation of soil beds of various types (clay, silt, sand).
  • Develop with instrumentation engineer methodology for instrumentation and monitoring soil and fluid behavior while drilling.
  • Conduct drilling tests in partnership with drilling engineer and others.
  • Analyze data to understand behavior, and to advance rapid drilling.
  • Apply knowledge gained to field horizontal drilling experiments planned during the project.
  • Analyze field drilling data with the goal to increase drilling performance and achieve project drilling metrics.  
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A PhD or MSc in a related field (e.g., geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, hydraulic engineering, soil physics, mechanical engineering, underground engineering, petroleum engineering). Preference will be given to applicants with doctoral degrees; however, MSc graduates with relevant knowledge and experience will be given careful consideration and are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience in the conduct of detailed soil mechanics testing, preferably at larger scales than traditional benchtop labs, is desired.
  • Experience with the topics described above.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out self-directed research.
  • Ability to work independently and to mentor a student or two.

Total Rewards: Starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.  The anticipated salary range is from $60,000-$100,000.  Mines provides an attractive benefits package including fully paid health and dental insurance.
