Scientific Visualization Engineer

The Opportunity:

The Scientific Visualization Engineer will lead the integration of visualization infrastructure for ITS’s Cyberinfrastructure and Advanced Research Computing (CIARC) team, rounding out its cohesive, efficient, successful research support unit. The Scientific Visualization Engineer will be the lead resource for visualization support, while helping to guide the team’s expansion into emergent and non-traditional deployments of other research support resources. Such directions will include development efforts around architecture of visualization infrastructure, software management, big data analytics, HPC/visualization integrations, and maintaining a keen eye on the horizon. Finally, through external collaborations with government agencies, like-minded universities and internal liaisons with faculty and researchers, the Scientific Visualization Engineer will strengthen communication, expose latent opportunities for collaboration, encourage multidisciplinary ventures among researchers and generally help diversify research at Mines.


Support of Visualization

  • Develop visualization-based applications, infrastructure, and support for the Mines community;
  • Keep abreast of innovative approaches to visualization:
    • Investigate wide varieties of visualization implementation at Mines;
    • Facilitate integration with High Performance Computing (HPC), Big Data Analytics, etc. when appropriate;
    • Evaluate potential for Mines to benefit from additional infrastructure, software and cloud services;
  • Collaborate with individuals or groups within the Mines community to discuss a broad-range of research challenges involving visualization. Solutions may range from one-off localized projects to campus-wide initiatives.
  • Engage with campus researchers to further adoption of visualization resources and avenues;
  • Be familiar with research efforts on campus;
  • Facilitate education and training related to visualization capabilities;
  • Participate in research proposals;
  • Forge collaborations with researchers on topics of mutual interest.

Support of High Performance Computing

  • Be responsible for the integration and interface of visualization technologies with HPC infrastructure;
  • Facilitate integration of innovations (i.e. AI/ML, BigData) when appropriate.

Liaison and Collaboration - Internal and External

  • Collaborate with external groups, organizations and entities to:
    • Expand research capabilities for Mines and Mines researchers;
    • Expand research opportunities for Mines and Mines researchers;
    • Actively participate in community-wide endeavors for visualization on campus;
  • Increase visibility of CIARC efforts through educational opportunities;
  • Assist in developing grant proposals for new research directions.

Project Coordination and Management

  • Serve as project manager for visualization related projects as needed
  • Assist in curating documentation for CIARC group;
  • Assist in production of usage statistics and reporting for visualization.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in computational sciences, applied mathematics, computer science or a related scientific discipline from an accredited four-year institution of higher education;
  • Significant amount of applicable experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified above;
  • Experience with large-scale parallel visualization and data analytics
  • Experience with innovative design for large-scale VDA systems;
  • Experience with photo-realistic rendering of the largest datasets;
  • Experience with implementing and developing VR and AR applications using Unity;
  • Comprehensive knowledge in data-intensive computing, including one or more of the following: Data movement and layout; Streaming data management and analysis; Scientific visualization; visual analytics; remote visualization and streaming.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in visualization technologies;
  • Ability to be visionary, innovate and advocate for innovations;
  • Demonstrated desire and ability to learn new procedures, software tools and skills, with a self- motivated, proactive approach to work responsibilities;
  • Experience with HPC environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master’s Degree in computational sciences, applied mathematics, computer science or related scientific discipline;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the current and developing strategic information technology requirements of a major research university;
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including operational management and strategic planning;
  • Experience using and implementing REST-based APIs
  • Comprehensive knowledge of one or more libraries and tools such as vtk, OpenGL, GLSL, CUDA, MPI, OpenMP
  • Considerable expertise in parallel programming, multicore systems, threading, and scientific application codes.
  • Experience in one or more science domain aligned with Mines’ mission areas; Earth, Energy, Environment.
