Position Title: Department of Engineering, Design, and Society - Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

The Opportunity:

The Engineering, Design, and Society (EDS) Division at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position focused on design and society. The candidate must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in a field relevant to the intersection of design and society, such as: 1) a design discipline with a focus on the social dimensions of design; 2) science and technology studies; 3) engineering education; or 4) a related area.

We seek candidates with an established research record at the intersection of design and society; a dedication to teaching and experience developing novel ways of engaging students; and the capacity for academic program development. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to effectively engage students and faculty from diverse disciplines and be prepared to participate actively within an intellectually and demographically diverse department. The successful candidate will be expected to continue developing an individual research program; to teach and participate in the development of interdisciplinary design studios and courses on the social dimensions of engineering and design; and to contribute service through student advising and academic program development within EDS and across campus.

About Mines, Golden, CO and the Department:

Colorado School of Mines is located in picturesque Golden, Colorado, in the foothills of the Rockies, 15 miles west of Denver and 20 miles south of Boulder. The EDS Division offers an innovative, all-new interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree with a focus on “integrative design,” bridging the technical, creative, and social dimensions of engineering practice. EDS also offers Humanitarian Engineering minors in community development and social responsibility as well as a master’s degree in Humanitarian Engineering and Science. EDS faculty members are highly engaged in engineering educational innovation, and have expertise spanning engineering design; design and systems thinking; engineering education; and science and technology studies (STS)/humanities, arts, and social sciences. Our faculty members are known internationally for their research in design and project-based learning, humanitarian engineering, corporate and social responsibility, and social-technical integration in engineering education. They teach core and elective courses to students across the Mines campus and collaborate broadly on inter-departmental research, education, and service initiatives.

Research Statement: Describe how your research contributes to scholarship in your area, relates to and complements research activities and expertise at Mines and in EDS, and promises impact to communities beyond the academy.
