Position Title: Report Writer and Systems Support
The Opportunity:

This position exists to develop and disseminate reliable, consistent, interpretable reports and analytics to support Finance and Administrative (F&A) offices (Controller’s Office, Research Administration, Procurement, Budget, etc.) and school leadership in making data-driven decisions. To provide them with both standardized and ad-hoc reports, to support systems, processes and practices related to the business activities of F&A.

This position will gain a basic understanding of the data systems and structures used by many of the institution’s business areas, an understanding of institutional strategic visions and initiatives as they relate to reporting needs and practices, and a well-rounded overall understanding of the business processes in F&A. The position must work in partnership with other Mines offices and departments, including but not limited to, Information Technology, and Institutional Reporting. Under the direction of the F&A leadership, the primary duties consist of report writing and data visualization creation, report management, report integration into business operations, data analytics that inform and support business decisions, and contract and research systems administration.


F&A Report Writing and Analytics: 

    • Primary author and report developer for F&A.
    • Extracts ODS data from various ERP systems and utilizes Cognos and other tools such as Tableau, Excel and in-system applications to develop reports, dashboards and performance metrics that support data-driven decision making in alignment with university data standards, data governance structure, and data policies.
    • Produces effective reports and analytics that improve core business processes within F&A.
    • Generates graphical representations of relevant data for inclusion in reports, presentations, and other electronic communications.
    • Ensures that all reports provide results that are interpretable to stakeholders and conform to broad institutional reporting standards.
    • Works with business and information/data management to understand and prioritize data and information needs, including the enrichment of data for classifications and roll-ups to support analytics, and building expressions and calculations.
    • Provides superior and responsive customer service; works effectively with internal customers to identify, estimate, prioritize and resolve issues.
    • Collaborates with other report authors and end users to encourage best practice usage via mentoring, training and development.
    • Provides content for communications and training efforts.

F&A Systems Administration Support:

    • Works with stakeholders to manage the business system applications and to ensure best practices and workflows are reflected in each system.
    • Responsible for integrity of data in systems and applications. Effects or supervises cleanup of data as necessary.
    • Supports systems’ tables, templates, workflows and data structure.
    • Liaisons with IT to map system data to ODS and create correct data entity relationships for system implementations and upgrades; works closely with F&A units, project management, external personnel and IT to migrate data between systems.
    • Performs administrative level system changes for user roles, views, dashboards, etc.
    • Creates and maintains HTML generated system processes such as email templates and error messages.

Website Design, Development and Maintenance: 

    • Updates and maintains existing F&A website content; migrates content between platforms as needed.
    • Investigates and recommends third party plug-ins to enable advanced functionality and tools for campus-wide usage.
    • Provides ad-hoc website development assistance to various Mines offices and departments.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a business-oriented or closely related field OR comparable analytics experience
  • Progressive experience in data reporting, data analysis, and/or data management
  • Evidence of understanding general business and data management practices
  • Familiarity with financial systems of record and data warehouse systems.
  • Has the ability and appetite to investigate and learn new analytics and data visualization tools and techniques
  • Evidence of careful and consistent oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A relevant advanced degree.
  • 3-5 years direct and detailed experience with the Banner, ODS, and Cognos systems.
  • Experience with an interactive data visualization product (Tableau, Salesforce, IBM Watson)
  • Familiarity with SQL.
