The Opportunity:

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering and the Space Resources Interdisciplinary Program at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Space Resources at the Assistant Professor level.  Our mission at Mines is to address the challenge of creating a sustainable global society by educating the next generation of geoscientists, engineers and leaders and by expanding the frontiers of knowledge on Earth and beyond our planet through fundamental and applied research.  We seek enthusiastic candidates who demonstrate the potential to develop interdisciplinary collaborations in our Department, across campus, and with research partners throughout Colorado, the United States, and around the world.  We are especially interested in candidates with a passion to advance the University’s and Department’s commitment to diversity and who are committed to contributing to an inclusive and collegial environment.

The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering and the Space Resources Interdisciplinary Program welcome applications from candidates who have expertise in planetary geology and the field of space resources, including, but not limited to, the mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry of lunar, asteroidal, and planetary materials, the study and exploration of extraterrestrial mineral/volatile/gaseous resources by remote sensing and ground truth methods, the integration of geological science with in situ resource utilization technologies, and economic geology.


The successful candidate will develop and teach online and residential courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervise graduate research and thesis projects, establish and grow a quality publication record, and develop a strong externally funded program that supports applied and fundamental research.  Teaching responsibilities will ideally include developing online and residential undergraduate and graduate courses on topics such as: planetary geology, resources of the Moon, asteroids, and Mars, and/or mineralogy, petrology, and geochemistry of lunar, asteroidal and planetary bodies. The candidate is also encouraged to successfully recruit and mentor a diverse group of students.

Given the multidisciplinary nature of the field of space resources, the successful candidate is encouraged to develop collaborative research across academic departments and programs at Mines, as well as with other universities, government agencies, and companies, nationally and internationally.  A PhD is required at the time of hire and post-doctoral or work experience is preferred.

About the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering:

This is an auspicious time to join the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering and become an important part of our future.  Currently, the Department has 20 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 1 teaching faculty, and 9 research faculty, 43% of whom are women and 10% of whom are minorities. We also have 3 staff who support the mission of our department. This cadre of professionals supports approximately 140 undergraduate students and 160 graduate students. The Department offers an ABET-accredited B.S. in Geological Engineering, and several M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered in the department and through interdisciplinary programs at Mines, including Geology, Geological Engineering, Hydrologic Sciences and Engineering, Geochemistry, and Underground Construction and Tunnel Engineering, as well as several non-thesis/Professional M.S. degrees. More information can be found at and In addition, the Subsurface Frontiers initiative with the USGS will bring a new building on campus by 2022 to house USGS geoscientists and their laboratories, together with a number of Mines faculty, researchers, and laboratories. More About the Space Resources Interdisciplinary Program

Since the beginning of the space age in the 1960s, Mines has been a leading institution for the study of space resources and in situ resource utilization (ISRU).  It has also become a destination for space scientists and engineers, government agencies, aerospace companies, entrepreneurs, the mining and minerals industry, financial and legal experts, and policy makers to discuss all topics related to space resources.  The broad topic of space resources brings together many fields in which Mines has a strong presence, including remote sensing, geomechanics, mining, materials/metallurgy, robotics/automation, advanced manufacturing, electrochemistry, solar and nuclear energy, and resource economics.  In this light, Mines launched the first-of-its-kind in the world multi-disciplinary graduate program in Space Resources in Fall 2018 to offer Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Master of Science, and Ph.D. degrees for college graduates and professionals interested in this emerging arena.  The program focuses on developing core knowledge and gaining design practices in systems for responsible exploration, extraction, and use of resources in the Solar System.  As of Spring 2020, the program has 84 students from 5 continents, 16 countries, and from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds in the sciences, engineering, economics, and public policy.
