Position Title: Web & Applications Developer
The Opportunity:

The Web & Applications Developer is responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing support of the Colorado School of Mines web and applications portfolio, mobile apps and web content management systems.  You will engage in project work and support new technology initiatives derived from the strategic plan.  Duties will include extending and supporting custom web apps framework, maintaining and enhancing the web site, designing a search tool, and developing front-end user digital initiatives. The Developer will also support cross-departmental development and troubleshooting using front-end and back- end development stack expertise.

Responsibilities:

Application

  • Defines innovative and high-quality applications and website objectives by analyzing user requirements and envisioning and implementing system features and functionality.
  • Designs and develops user application interfaces by setting expectations and features priorities throughout development life cycle. 
  • Collaborates with customers and/or vendors to clarify and develop project specifications, prototype review, system testing and project completion.
  • Integrates applications by designing database architecture and server scripting and establishing connectivity with network systems, search engines, and information servers.
  • Supports users by developing documentation and assistance tools.
  • Collaborates with various groups (customers, business system analysts, and technical infrastructure administrators) to address application issues.

Operational Management

  • Architects, implements, maintains and provides support for the campus web servers, search engines and web content management systems.
  • Collaborates with other ITS team members and business owners in other departments to support and assist content providers use the Content Management System.
  • Oversees front-end operations through monitoring of errors/log for speed, stability and performance.
  • Works with ITS and the Office of Communications and Marketing to ensure hosting infrastructure provides an excellent developer and end user experience.
  • Leads ITS and Mines towards the use of first-class tooling and infrastructure including: Jira, Gitlab, Kubernetes or similar tools and containerization.

Design & Implementation

  • Administers the design, development and implementation of software and hardware solutions, systems, or products.
  • Creates systematic and consistent requirements specifications in both technical and functional languages.
  • Ensures front-end implementation of website, mobile apps and applications meet or exceed performance standards (e.g. responsiveness, modular/scalable CSS, UI frameworks, living style guides, progressive enhancement & accessibility, and animation).
  • Recommends system solutions by comparing advantages and disadvantages of custom development, functionality in existing applications and purchase alternatives.
  • Completes website development by coordinating requirements, schedules, and activities; contributing to team meetings; troubleshooting development and production problems across multiple environments and operating platforms.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience in the field of software engineering, computer science or information systems.  Individuals without a degree may be considered if they demonstrate possession of substantially the same knowledge level as found in a degree, but have attained the advanced knowledge through a combination of work experience and intellectual instruction.
  • Five or more years of web and/or application development experience working with multiple stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of application development and software development life cycle concepts including Agile and Waterfall methodologies.
  • Working technical knowledge of programming languages and/or technologies, including PL/SQL, Java, Pro*C, Groovy on Grails, GIT.
  • Proficiency with .Net and C#.
  • Experience with JavaScript, CSS and HTML/XHTML, HTMLS languages.
  • Familiarity with content management systems like Drupal, Word Press and others.
  • Experience with PHP, XML, web interface design, connecting web front ends to back-end databases and systems, and object-oriented software design practices.
  • Ability to work on a team or individually by effectively managing work time to deliver a quality product.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, project manage, set priorities, gather requirements and solve problems.
  • Ability to collaborate as part of integrated teams of both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Proven analytical and creative problem-solving skills.  Logical and efficient, with keen attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience using web APls to develop mashups or web applications.
  • Experience with ERP systems, Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Enterprise Document Management (EDM), ROMS and Operational Data Stores (ODS).
  • Experience with cloud platforms like AWS and Azure.
  • Proven ability to solve problems where a precedent may not have been established and the aptitude to develop innovative solutions to support business needs.
  • Demonstrated experience extending content management systems and/or developing tools for information retrieval systems.
