Position Title: Total Rewards Consultant
The Opportunity:

The Total Rewards Consultant will administer all total reward processes contributing to the planning, design and implementation of compensation, benefits and recognition programs. The ideal person in this role will be consultative, collaborative and instrumental in standardizing and maintaining Mines’ programs while ensuring the competitiveness of offerings. The role will collaborate with internal and external partners on the devising of new and existing total reward schemes and implementing changes where necessary, with the ultimate goal of being more efficient and innovative in administering and managing total rewards programs.


Program Advisory

  • Provides HR with the strategy, design, process and tools/templates to execute Total Rewards initiatives.
  • Assesses the effectiveness of current programs in relation to the institution’s objectives and recommends changes where necessary; leads implementation of updated program designs.
  • Develops, standardizes and manages HR reports and dashboards which include, but  are not limited to, headcount reports and any/all other data reports to support general total rewards queries.
  • Collaborates with institutional leaders to understand the business/functional strategy and Total Rewards impacts and opportunities and leverages the frameworks and governance to advise HRBPs and HR Leadership on total rewards decisions to ensure alignment with policy and business objectives.
  • Provides proactive consultation and identification of gaps/opportunities to ensure Total Rewards programs optimize the institution’s ability to attract and retain top talent.


  • Researches, designs, analyzes, evaluates, and administers reward and recognition programs Institution-wide, including benefits, compensation (base pay, incentive pay, performance management) and other reward programs (i.e. peer to peer, EOM/Q recognition) and ensures programs meet the institution’s overall performance, pay and recognition strategy.
  • Evaluates jobs, determines and create pay grades, participates in compensation surveys, and performs associated market analyses. Analyzes job data reviewed in market analyses and recommends pay grade slotting and compensation packages (new or redefined positions).
  • Builds effective and collaborative working relationships while partnering with campus leaders to benchmark positions based on size, scope, complexity, discretion and latitude, and other components like required professional experience and education.
  • Designs, implements and manages base and annual merit pay programs; develops the merit budget recommendations in partnership with HR and Finance Leadership for institutional review/approval.
  • Analyzes current trends to estimate impact on institution and tracks applicable compensation legislation, at both the State and Federal level, to ensure Mines maintains internal and external compliance with all legal requirements; prepares and files legally required reports as needed.


  • Evaluates current benefit programs through research/surveys and analyzes trends to ensure programs are competitive to market and aligned with mandatory requirements.
  • Partners with HR team members and the business units/departments to execute program deployment; this also includes accountability, as necessary, for annual renewals for all third- party vendors, clearly articulating performance expectations for such vendors and consistently holding each accountable for their results.
  • Assists in the planning and administration of open enrollment efforts ensuring that employees have resources/guidance needed to make benefit decisions.
  • Maintains internal and external compliance with all legal requirements and prepares and files legally required reports in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership to ensure benefit programs support the institution’s business objectives and meet all legal requirements.

Employee Recognition & Performance Management

  • Designs or evaluates/develops and administers overall employee recognition framework and program, including performance management (for classified and non-classified employees, including academic faculty), one-time incentives and on-going incentive offerings.
  • Ensures that the ongoing administration of our programs are effectively executed and ensures the process is simple and efficient for managers.
  • Collects and analyzes data and reports on program usage.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of progressive experience in compensation planning and administration, pay structure analysis/design, benefits and total rewards.
  • Creative thinker who can provide thought leadership, think analytically and solve complex issues and challenges while influencing and effectively communicating ideas to all levels of the institution to gain buy-in and alignment around key priorities.
  • Ability to gauge effectiveness of the institution’s total rewards programs and translate data into solutions to continually improve programs and practices.
  • Demonstrated consultative and collaborative skills to partner and consult with all levels of management and provide guidance.
  • Exhibits excellent composure, responding consistently, openly, and courageously in all situations.
  • Communicates a vision of the future that compels others and helps them see around corners. Embraces change, takes risks, and seeks diverse perspectives.
  • Strong analytical aptitude to analyze a large amount of data and see beyond the numbers to support sound decision-making as well as communicate the “story” succinctly to leadership. 
  • Experience and proficiency with 401k, Defined Contribution Retirement Plans, Compensation Benefits plans. 
  • Extensive knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office products; specifically intermediate/expert knowledge of MS Excel, including pivot tables, vlookups, macros, etc.
  • Sound judgment, strong business acumen, and ability to maintain a high-degree of confidentiality relative to personal data and information maintained in the HR systems.
  • Understanding of government regulations as they apply to compensation, including The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), The Equal Pay Act, base pay, overtime, shift pay and incentive compensation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience with Banner or similar HRIS/payroll/ERP system. Experience partnering with CHEIBA or other benefit  trust.
  • 2+ years of Total Rewards experience in Higher Education.
  • State of Colorado PCP Certification in Job Evaluation and Selection.
  • Design and implementation experience with short-term and long-term incentive plans for the public sector or state entity.
