Pay Range:

$62,900.00 - $118,200.00

The Opportunity:

The Data Scientist’s role is to harness vast amounts of data to optimize business results. The incumbent will exercise their knowledge of descriptive and multivariate statistical techniques and applications, and database analysis tools and techniques to develop strategic insights to drive business goals. The data scientist works hard at advancing the state-of-the-art in how data is applied to solve problems in our institution. They are also responsible for teaching data analysts, data users, and data consumers how to work effectively with vast quantities of data. The Data Scientists will be part of a team that is building a robust, reliable, agile data culture.  The incumbent will support our collaborative partners by developing simple to complex business intelligence queries, reports, dashboards, analysis, statistical and/or predictive modeling techniques to support data informed decisions and any other defined deliverable.  This position will support the implementation and maintenance of a data governance and management system to improve data quality and transparency which will improve our efficiency of delivering data quickly.  This position will support the Director of Institutional Research and Strategic Analytics with analyzing and fulfilling external reporting obligations that adhere to state and federal policies.       


Data Strategy and Planning

  • Work with cross departmental team to define metrics, guidelines, and strategies for effective use of data.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to identify, design, and build appropriate datasets for complex experiments.
  • Create data mining and analytics architectures, data standards/definitions, statistical reporting, and data analysis methodologies.
  • Establish links across existing data sources and find new, interesting mash-ups.
  • Coordinate data resource requirements between BI team, functional users (e.g. report writers) and DB teams.
  • Work with stakeholders, ES, and BI team members to translate prototypes into production.
  • Assist in the development of data management policies and procedures.
  • Develop best practices for analytics composition and consumption.

Data Quality and Data Governance Management

  • Ensure usable and trustworthy data is available to the business and its processes.
  • Analyze and recommend improvements to data management components in order to support improved data quality.
  • Coordinate efforts between ES, BI Team and the business units that manage and maintain the quality of data assets on an ongoing basis.
  • Investigate data quality issues, and work with data stewards to determine root cause and design corrective plans that enable the maintained integrity of data assets.
  • Develop and maintain the day to day operations of the data management and governance system including system set-up, instructions, and training for end users.
  • Lead the development of data definitions, data classification, data standards and data quality in collaboration with the data stewards
  • Develop monthly reports for the Data Governance Advisory Board on status of data definition development, data quality resolutions and issues preventing the delivery of data efficiently.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks on reports and data prepared for internal and external dissemination and develop tools for internal data audits.
  • Supports the effort of data literacy by implementing it into daily conversations, coaching data requestors, increasing the quality of how data is used to answer questions.

Acquisition and Deployment

  • Conduct research and make recommendations on data infrastructure, analytics tools, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Drive the collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources.

Operational Management

  • Develop algorithms and predictive models to solve critical business problems.
  • Develop tools and libraries that will help analytics team members more efficiently interface with huge amounts of data.
  • Analyze large, noisy datasets and identify meaningful patterns that provide actionable results.
  • Develop and automate new enhanced imputation algorithms.
  • Create informative visualizations that intuitively display large amounts of data and/or complex relationships.
  • Provide and apply quality assurance best practices for data science services across the organization.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to data analytics.
  • Collaborate with database and disaster recovery administrators to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets.
  • Collaborates with academic and administrative units to supports data informed decision making by determining the best data sources, extracting and statistically analyzing the data and presenting findings.
  • Collaborate with other researchers in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of surveys.
  • Conduct surveys and collect data, using methods such as interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, market analysis surveys, public opinion polls, literature reviews, and file reviews.
  • Responsible for providing appropriate data to internal and external requestors including data requests, survey submissions, and data coaching.
  • Develop a suite of annual reporting including peer comparisons, trends, opportunities and concerns in higher education.
  • Extract simple to complex data from business intelligence tools.
  • Build dashboards and written reports to aid in the dissemination of data.
  • Develop the usage of external data bases to inform campus of data trends and observations.
  • Conducts comprehensive studies on targeted topics.
  • Develop statistical models in support of identifying impacts to internal and external policy decisions.
  • Supports the compliance and accreditation data collection efforts, providing both the data, guidance and submission of the School's required compliance activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or work experience with strong math and analysis skills.  Individuals without a degree may be considered if they demonstrate possession of substantially the same knowledge level as found in a degree, but have attained the advanced knowledge through a combination of work experience and intellectual instruction.
  • Four years of relevant experience.
  • Programming skills with SQL, Python, and/or R.
  • Comfort manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources and from very large data sets.
  • Extensive experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches.
  • Experience with statistical methods to analyze data.
  • Knowledge of data gathering, cleaning and transforming techniques.
  • A strong passion for empirical research and for answering hard questions with data.
  • A flexible analytic approach that allows for results at varying levels of precision.
  • Reporting and data visualization skills.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Technical writing skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Project management experience.
  • Strong written/presentation/verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to Q/A and troubleshoot data.
  • Proficiency in utilizing the Office 365, on-line chat and web 2.0 tools.
  • Initiatives and facilitates successful collaboration to effectively and tactfully deal with internal and external stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree with strong math and analysis skills
  • Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives
  • Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws
  • Experience with state and federal Higher Education policies
  • Experience with surveying and rankings for Higher Education
  • Reporting and data visualization skills using software like Tableau, Cognos
  • Understanding of data warehousing and ETL techniques
  • Experience with Higher Education ERP systems (ex; Banner, People Soft, Workday)
  • Experience with website development
