Post-Doctoral Fellow - Large-Scale Full-Waveform Modeling
The Opportunity

Global & Computational Seismology group at the Department of Geophysics, Colorado School of Mines, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on large-scale full-waveform modeling of seismic data on high-performance computing and Cloud environments as part of the NSF funded SCOPED (Seismic Computational Platform for Empowering Discovery) project. Potential projects are multi-scale full-waveform modeling of source and structure with passive sources (i.e., earthquake and ambient noise) and heterogeneous data types (i.e., from broadband instruments, DAS, MERMAIDs, etc.), optimizing full-waveform inversion workflows for large-scale simulations and datasets (automatization of workflows, implementing machine learning algorithms, etc). The successful candidate’s responsibilities will involve both theoretical, method, and technical developments as well as application of them to multi-scale seismological problems. The position is available immediately for a year with a potential extension of two more years upon satisfactory progress.   • Developing tools for HPC and Cloud environments to facilitate processing and full-waveform modeling of large data sets.
  • Defining strategies for large-scale multi-parameter full-waveform inversion (regional to global scales).
  • Collaborate with the SCOPED Team and the research group (other postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students) at Mines.
  • Attend the online and in person SCOPED Team meetings.
  • Writing manuscripts for peer reviewed journals and presenting results in (inter)national conferences and workshops.
Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD degree in computational sciences, seismology, (geo)physics, applied mathematics or related fields.
  • Experience in numerical methods, 3D numerical full-waveform modeling.
  • Experience with HPC, seismic data (earthquake waveforms, ambient noise, etc.) & processing and inversion.
  • Good communicational (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills for collaborative work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Full-waveform inversion (applications and/or theoretical and technical developments).
  • Fortran90/95, C++ and/or Python.
  • Experience in high-performance computing.
  • Open-source code development and maintenance (i.e., GitHub repositories).
  • Experience with SPECFEM3D (Cartesian and/or Global versions) and AxiSEM packages or any other similar 3D regional/global wave propagation solvers.

Pay Range

$50,000- $63,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
