Part-Time Communication Consultant 
The Opportunity

The Payne Institute for Public Policy at Colorado School of Mines is in a unique position to connect high-quality, data-driven, solutions-oriented research with the dialogue needed to inform energy and environmental policy at this critical moment. Our internationally recognized members of the leadership team continue to drive meaningful conversations that are gaining national media attention. We are looking for a communications coordinator who is passionate about public policy on earth resources, energy, and the environment. This position will serve as an integrated member of our team to create buzzworthy content, coordinate media opportunities, monitor social media and relevant news sources, build SEO, and more.

  • Coordinate and write communications content (e.g., news articles, newsletters, social media posts, and web content) to align with internal style and brand guidelines
    • Engage with researchers to identify opportunities for communications outreach
    • Engage with the community, reporters, and trending topics on Twitter and LinkedIn
    • Suggest topics for social content, blogs, OpEds, bylines, or media pitches based on trending topics
    • Drafted social posts: be aware of upcoming events (such as conferences, white house announcements, funding opportunities, etc.) and be prepared with hashtags, content from the library to amplify, and the right handles
    • Upcoming cultural, government, and academic events that coincide with topics you want to discuss
    • Manage social channels and lead content amplification (listed above)
    • Manage social listening
    • Create a PR calendar to ensure a constant buzz. Could include:
    • Track opportunities to build SEO
  • Opportunity for graphic design, if experience aligns  
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related subject required. Experience working for a public relations, advertising, or marketing desired.

Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven track record of building effective working relationships media, industry influencers, and external partners

Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, including strong media relations skills; experience writing news releases, blog posts, media pitches, speeches/presentation talking points, newsletters, and other written materials; experience creating engaging social media content using up-to-date tactics across relevant platforms

Strict attention to detail and the ability to work to tight deadlines; solid organizational and project management skills; ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage projects autonomously

Working knowledge of simple SEO tactics and website management skills

Bonus points for Adobe Creative Suite experience for simple graphics/infographics.

Pay Range

$33.85 - $35/hour

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
